Carolyn McClatchy Garrard, a cherished educator and beloved matriarch, peacefully departed world on December 31, 2025, in her home.
In honor of Carolyn's remarkable life, a Visitation will be held at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland, Mississippi, on January 2, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 3:00 PM. A Graveside Service will be held later on Monday, January the 5th, at 10:30am in Indianola City Cemetery.
Carolyn was born on September 21, 1937, in Indianola, Mississippi, to Charles and Verla McClatchy. Carolyn led a life rich in love, curiosity, and dedication. With a remarkable career spanning four decades, Carolyn was most known for her invaluable contributions to North Sunflower Academy. Her passion for teaching was evident, and she inspired countless students with her unwavering belief in the power of learning. A master in her craft, her inquisitive nature and love for knowledge shone brightly in every lesson she imparted. Many students carry the memory her influence and guidance to this day; she was not just a teacher, but a nurturing mentor who made a profound impact in their lives.
Carolyn's proudest accomplishments were her roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She adored her family, which was the cornerstone of Carolyn's life. She nurtured connections and relationships with great care, and she found profound satisfaction in their happiness as well as imparting the many life lessons her family carries with them through their lives.
Beyond her roles in education and family, Carolyn had a light-hearted spirit. She relished the simple pleasures in life, from attending ball games to enjoying the serene beauty of the beach, each moment cherished as a testament to her enthusiasm for living fully. She often reminisced fondly about her childhood at Waltonia, a place that held many memories close to her heart.
Carolyn was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Verla McClatchy, her sister Beth McClatchy Switzer, and her niece Elizabeth McClatchy.
Carolyn is survived by her loving children, Flip Godfrey and his wife Dawn, Mary Lynn Godfrey McPherson, her cherished grandchildren: Lane McPherson (Kenner) Purvis, Leslie McPherson, Denver Wilson, Rance Godfrey, and Hamp Godfrey. and her beloved great-grandchildren, Cooper and Bo Purvis, as well as her siblings, Charles "Toby" McClatchy and Nancy McClatchy (Jim) Woods, alongside her nephew Chip (Dodie) McElmurray and niece Lori McElmurray (Wes) Thomas.
Carolyn McClatchy Garrard's vibrant spirit, loving presence, and life-long love of learning will be missed dearly. Her legacy as a devoted teacher, a caring mother, a proud grandmother, and a loyal friend will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Bayou Academy.
