Cheryl Cummins

Mrs. Letha Cheryl Jackson Cummins, 51, of Cleveland, passed away on Saturday, May 19, 2018, in Leland, MS.  Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018, in Jacob's Conference Center located in Ewing Hall at Delta State University. A Memorial Service will follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Jacob's Conference Center located in Ewing Hall.
Cheryl was born in Grenada, MS, on July 15, 1966, to James Kellum Jackson and Esther Fay Orrell Jackson.  After graduating high school, she furthered her education by receiving a Bachelors in Education from Delta State University in 1988, as well as a Masters of Education in 1989.  On July 7, 1990, she married John Mark Cummins in Holcomb, MS.  In 1996, she decided to advance her skills and knowledge, and she obtained her Doctorate in Education from the University of Mississippi in 1996. With a passion to teach others, she began her career as an educator by teaching elementary school for several years  before becoming a devoted member of the Delta State University Staff in 1996.
In her time at Delta State, she wore many hats.  She was the Director of Field Experiences and a Professor in the College of Education and Human Sciences; and she gave her all in assisting numerous students over the years, especially during their student teaching.  She also stayed active as an Alumnus in Kappa Delta Sorority.  In 2016, she was honored to receive the Joe Garrison Loyalty Award from Delta State University after 20 years of dedication to the school. Students and colleagues have described her as genuine, patient, and kind; more than anything, she was humble.
In addition to serving the university, she also gave back to her community.  She was a member of the Cleveland Rotary Club. She also gave her all to the St. Luke United Methodist Church congregation, where she led the Children's Ministries for many years, as well as taught Sunday School and delivered the children's message each Sunday.
Most importantly, Cheryl was a devoted and loving wife and mother, whose main focus was the happiness of her family.
Cheryl is survived by her beloved husband, J. Mark Cummins of Cleveland; daughters, Kellie Cummins and Hayley Cummins both of Cleveland; mother, Esther Fay Jackson of Holcomb; father, James Kellum Jackson of Holcomb; brother, Gary Jackson (Penny) of Holcomb; brothers-in-law, Ken Cummins of Memphis, TN and Teddy Cummins (Suzanne) of Summerfield, FL; niece, Reagan Jackson; and nephews, Chris Cummins of Vicksburg and Nicholaus Cummins (Whitney) of Natchitoches, LA.
In memory of Cheryl, the family requests donations be made to the St. Luke United Methodist Church Major Upgrade Fund and/or the Cheryl Jackson Cummins Memorial Scholarship Fund at Delta State University.
