Eloise Griffin Cobb McCown of Cleveland, MS, was called to be with her Heavenly Father on March 23, 2023, at her home. A visitation honoring her life will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland, MS. Celebration of Life Services will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. The interment will be at Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville, MS.
Eloise was born on October 28, 1946, in Tomnolen, MS, to Alton and Merle Griffin. She spent most of her childhood on the Quiver River and had many memories of working and playing there with her brothers and sisters. She was a very accomplished basketball player at Ruleville High School, from which she graduated in 1964. Eloise married Hercial Wayne Cobb, Sr., on December 4, 1966, and they were together for 43 years until Wayne’s death in 2010.
Eloise was a faithful, loving wife, mother, and grandmother who loved the Lord above all else. She enjoyed being a homemaker when her children were young, and then she enjoyed her time working at Sunburst and Cleveland State Bank. After the birth of her first grandchild, Jesus led her to retire so she could take care of her grandchildren full-time.
Eloise married Earl McCown in August 2014. She was happy in her role as a Pastor’s wife supporting Earl as he was led to be the Pastor at Bethal Baptist Church.
Eloise is survived by her husband, Earl McCown, children, Hercial Wayne Cobb Jr. (Mary Susan) of Owasso, OK and Lois Anne Cobb-Haney (Troy) of Ruleville, MS, stepchildren, Vickie McCown Cobb of Helena, AR, Mitch McCown of Coldwater, MS and Jon McCown of Tupelo, MS, siblings, Billy Joe Griffin (Faye), Cora Lee Morris, and Nina Faye Poe (Oscar), sister-in-law, Mary Lou Cobb Forbes, grandchildren, Sara Chesley and Jax Cobb of Owasso, OK and Keely Linn Haney of Ruleville, MS, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Eloise is preceded in passing by her parents, Alton and Merle Griffin, her beloved husband, Hercial Wayne Cobb, Sr., siblings, James Homer Griffin, Huey Griffin, Jack Griffin, and Joan Barnett sister-in-law, Shirlene Cobb Weaver, and grandson, Hercial Wayne Cobb III (Trace).
The family would like to give special thanks to Eloise’s caretaker, Latoya with Magnolia Home Care and other sitters providing exceptional care to Eloise in her final days. Also, Heart of Hospice.
Memorials can be made to The Well, in Cleveland, MS, or Zoe Ministries.
