James Dennis Fleming

James Dennis Fleming was born on September 10, 1927, in Cleveland, MS. He was the son of Thomas Amer and Georgia Lee Mooneyham Fleming. He was called to his Heavenly home on May 11, 2019. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2019, at Ray Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2019, at Drew Baptist Church with Rev. Rick Milan officiating.
Interment will be in Drew Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings T.A. Fleming, J.F. Fleming, Bessie Fleming Howell, Mary Fleming McDaniel, Betty Fleming Murray, Karl Wayne Fleming and Jeanette Fleming Smith, his first wife Marie Malone Fleming and son in law Barry Parker.
James is survived by his wife, Joan Pettigrew Burchfield Fleming of Drew, MS, his children Wade (Paula) Fleming of Troy, MI, Jessie (Jeanie) Fleming of Drew, MS, Diane (John) Maples of Pleasant Plains, AR and Jackie (Mike) of Pearl, MS, grandchildren Michelle Williams, Mark Fleming, Kimberly Scutch, Josh Fleming, Amy Wood, Jerod Fleming and Michael Parker and great grand children Nathan and Carson Williams, Cameron and Madison Morris, Cyrus and Maggie Fleming, Kade, Matthew and Anna Kaylan Fleming, Bailee Johnson, Sophie and Ainsley Scutch and Mary Peyton Parker. He is also survived by his lifelong friend, Sam Lloyd of Drew.
He began his law enforcement career with the Drew, MS Police Department in 1955. He was the first appointed Police Chief for the City of Drew. He retired as Chief of Police with 32 years of service. He was an active member of the MS Law Enforcement Officers Association and the MS Chiefs Association. He was elected Vice President for the northern district for the Chiefs of Police Association. After retiring, he loved working for Buddy Weeks selling cars. He was an active member of the Drew Masonic Lodge #459 since 1962, where he served as Worshipful Master for 2 years and Grand High Priest of the Council. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Drew Chapter #69, where he served as Worthy Patron for 4 years. He was a member of Drew Baptist Church for over 50 years. He loved hunting frogs, deer, and small game, and playing dominoes.
