James Hill

James Hill, a beloved father and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully at his home in Florence, MS on May 5, 2025, at the age of 87.

A visitation honoring James Hill will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Ray Funeral Home from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

He was born on February 21, 1938, in Memphis, TN, to Fred and Francis Dupree Hill. Growing up in Memphis, James attended and graduated from Millington High School, where he laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and commitment to his family.

After high school, James proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for two years, a time that instilled in him a deep sense of honor and duty. Following his military service, he found his true calling in both farming and logging alongside his family in Gunnison, MS. It is here that he truly thrived, supported by the love of his life, Geraldine Earp Hill, whom he married in a union that lasted 53 cherished years until her passing. Together, they instilled strong values and an enduring spirit of resilience in their family.

In the years that followed, James transitioned to a successful career in Field & Crop Insurance, a role he embraced until retirement. He was a steadfast member of Gunnison Baptist Church, where he found community and fellowship, exemplifying the kind of warmth and kindness that endeared him to so many.

Known for his green thumb, James took great joy in tending to his garden. He was often seen selling his renowned tomatoes, a testament to his love for the land and to sharing the fruits of his labor with those around him. An avid woodworker, he crafted beautiful pieces that will remain as lasting memories of his creativity and skill.

Mr. Hill is preceded in death by his loving wife, Geraldine, his parents, Fred and Francis Hill, his sister-in-law, Sue Harris and brother-in-law Ameil (Bubba) Earp.

James is survived by his daughters, Melissa (Michael) Harrison of Florence, MS, Cassy Hill of Nashville, TN, and Jamie (Michael) Windham of Florence, MS. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Marshall (Kimberly) Harrison, Maverick (Kimberly) Harrison, Jessica Allyn Smith, Amelia (Clay) Sansing, Lindsey (Robert) Myers, Micah Windham, and Maddie Jae Windham. He will also be deeply missed by his sister Diana Hill and sister-in-law Rebecca Whitt.
