Jan Shepherd

Janice “Jan” Parker Shepherd of Merigold, Mississippi, passed away peacefully at her home on June 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Jan was born on November 30, 1955, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Neva Pearson Parker and James Elmer “Moe” Parker, Jr. She was raised in Rayville, Louisiana, where she graduated from Riverfield Academy. She went on to attend Northeast Louisiana University, earning a bachelor’s degree in social work. It was there she met the love of her life, Michael “Mike” Shepherd. They married in 1980 and built a life together, raising two children, Chelsea and Parker.

Jan was a devoted wife, mother, and “JJ” to her beloved granddaughter, Mary Michael. She was known for her deep love of animals, her fiery spirit, and her unwavering loyalty to her loved ones. Jan had a vibrant personality and great compassion that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She found joy and peace in her backyard, taking great pride in her flowers and plants, and spending hours lovingly tending to them.

Jan also had a strong Christian faith, which guided her and brought her strength and direction throughout her life. She lived with kindness, faithfulness, and a deep sense of purpose.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Mike Shepherd, her daughter, Chelsea Shepherd of Memphis, TN, her son, Parker Shepherd of Merigold, and her granddaughter, Mary Michael Shepherd. She also leaves behind her siblings, Mark Parker, Carol Rolfe (Pete), and James “Tracy” Parker (Jamie), as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, the late Neva Pearson Parker and James Elmer “Moe” Parker, Jr.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Jan’s life will be held for close friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter or rescue in Jan’s honor, or to the Delta Arts Alliance, an organization close to her heart through her granddaughter’s love of art.
