Obituary for Joanna Lynn Alford Long
September 1, 1946 – July 27, 2025
Joanna Lynn Alford Long, affectionately known as JoLynn, a devoted wife, beloved mother, cherished grandmother, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, following a brief illness. Graveside will be 12:00 p.m. Monday, August 4, 2025, at Shaw Cemetery.
JoLynn was born on September 1, 1946, in Cleveland, Mississippi, to Elbert Robert Alford and Jo Fincher Howell. She was raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where her southern charm and warm heart were nurtured from an early age.
After two previous marriages, JoLynn found her soulmate in Jack Russell Long. The couple were married on October 18, 1975, in New Orleans and shared 45 wonderful years together until Jack’s passing. Their life together was marked by adventure and exploration, as they moved frequently for Jack’s construction career—living in places as far-reaching as South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Canada, in addition to numerous locations throughout the United States.
The center of JoLynn’s world was her daughter, Shannon Lear Martin, and her granddaughter, Avery Lynne Martin. Her pride in them was boundless, and she never missed a chance to speak of their accomplishments and joys.
JoLynn was a lifelong admirer of the music and mission of John Denver. She actively supported his environmental and humanitarian efforts through the Windstar Foundation, serving on its board of directors. She was also a passionate supporter of the arts and played a pivotal role on the board of the Palace Theater in Georgetown, Texas, where she contributed countless hours during a significant period of renovation and renewal.
JoLynn is survived by her loving son-in-law, Mitch Martin; her treasured granddaughter, Avery Martin; stepsons Travis Long and Jack “Duece” Long; sister-in-law Maura Alford; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Long; her daughter, Shannon Martin; and her brother, Bob Alford.
JoLynn will be laid to rest in the J.H. Wiggins family plot at the A.E. Graham Cemetery in Shaw, Mississippi.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Visiting Angels of Georgetown, Magnolia Hospice, Swan Song, and the Grand Living staff for their compassionate and devoted care.
JoLynn’s legacy of love, resilience, and dedication to family, music, and community will continue to inspire all who knew her.
