John Hobbs

John Edwin Hobbs, Sr., 82, of Cleveland, passed away Monday, June 27, 2016, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, MS. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Ray Funeral Home. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2016, at First Baptist Church in Cleveland with Rev. Brad Beckwith and Rev. Milton Burd officiating. Interment will be at Shelby Cemetery. Mr. Hobbs was born in Elkmont, AL on June 25, 1934, to James Henry Hobbs and Mallie Lee Lively Hobbs. On November 6, 1953, he married Mary Ruth Turner in Hernando, MS. At the age of 19 he began working at Demco Distributing Company in Shelby, MS. He was a dedicated, hardworking man who eventually became the owner of Demco Distributing Company until he sold it in June of 2007. He also was a partner at Serv-U Petroleum. Mr. Hobbs was a sweet, gentle man who would do whatever needed to be done and volunteered his time. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cleveland, MS and a past Deacon of First Baptist Church in Shelby, MS. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Shelby Country Club, and was a Mason. In his spare time, Mr. Hobbs thoroughly enjoyed golfing and spending time with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Henry Hobbs and Mallie Lee Lively Hobbs; brothers, James Luther Hobbs and Boyd Lively "Cotton" Hobbs; and sister, Nora Lou Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs is survived by his wife, Mary Turner Hobbs of Cleveland; sons, John Edwin Hobbs, Jr. (Carolyn) of Merigold and Boyd Allen Hobbs (Gala) of Aubrey, TX; grandchildren, Janelle Hobbs Douglas (Heath) of Greenville, John Edwin "Tripp" Hobbs, III (Terri Jo) of Cleveland, Valarie Lynn Hobbs of Dallas, TX, Chad Allen Hobbs of Dallas, TX, and Blake Austin Hobbs of Dallas, TX; great-grandchildren, Darby Douglas of Greenville, Parker Douglas of Greenville, Jenna Newkirk of Cleveland, and Chad Hobbs of Dallas, TX; sister, Anna Hobbs Brandon (Mitchell) of Ridgeland; and sister-in-law, Linda Hobbs Ashford of Charlotte, NC; a host of nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Audrey Thomas, Barbara Robinson, and Mary Sutton. Pallbearers will be Jim Hobbs, David Hobbs, Kenny Hobbs, Jim Harpole, Heath Douglas, and Reed Brandon. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Brandon, Gary Brandon, John Michael Brandon, Jimmy Yeager, John Denton, Pat Denton, Jack Denton, Jr., Butler Denton, H.L. Dilworth, Lee Burke, Johnny Summers, C.T. Danna and Charles Danna. In memory of Mr. Hobbs, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church in Cleveland, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shelby Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 88, Shelby, MS 38774. A very special thanks is given to the Bolivar Medical Center Long Term Care caregivers for all of their kindness and love shown to Mr. Hobbs and his family.
