Jonett Valentine

Jonett Valentine, a beloved member of the community and a dedicated librarian, passed away on July 26, 2025, at the age of 89 in Cleveland, Mississippi. Born on February 24, 1936, in Lambert, Mississippi, Jonett devoted her life to education and community service, making a profound impact on everyone who knew her. A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland, MS, with a Memorial Service to immediately follow at 3:00 p.m.

Jonett was born on February 24, 1936, in Lambert, MS, to William Earl and Frieda Sanford. With a Master’s degree in library science, Jonett enjoyed a fulfilling career that spanned across Delta State University Library and the local Public Library. Her passion for literature and learning inspired many, and her engaging personality made her a cherished mentor to young students and fellow librarians alike. Jonett's love for mystery, fantasy, and science fiction shaped her commitment to helping others discover the joys of reading.Not only an outstanding librarian, Jonett was also an avid genealogy researcher, dedicating a significant portion of her time to uncovering family histories and connecting people with their roots. She was also proud to be an early member of the Little Theater and the Cleveland Historical Preservation Community, contributing to the cultural richness of her town. Her green thumb earned her the title of master gardener, which she carried with pride as she beautified her surroundings.Jonett’s deep-seated desire to help others extended beyond her professional life; she actively engaged with the Delta Chinese Community, and beyond.  Fostering friendship and collaboration within the diverse fabric of her hometown.

She is survived by her son, Christopher John Valentine, and her sister, Mary Catherine Collins (Gary), both of whom will carry forth her spirit and legacy. Jonett was preceded in death by her husband, John Valentine; her brother, Murray Sanford; and her parents, William and Frieda Sanford.Jonett Valentine will be sorely missed but never forgotten, as her love for others and passion for knowledge left an indelible mark on the hearts of all she encountered.
