Joseph "Ray" Rayford Cothran

Joseph Rayford Cothran, known affectionately as Ray, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026.

A visitation honoring Ray will be held on Wednesday, April 1st, at First Baptist Church in Cleveland MS, at 10am, with a Celebration of Life service at 11am, and a graveside service at North Cleveland Cemetery following immediately after.

Born on May 13, 1938, to Ruble and Mary Claire Cothran in Morgan City, Mississippi, Ray lived a life marked by generosity, dedication, and deep-rooted faith. For more than 44 years, Ray devoted himself as a salesman for Dixie Tobacco and Candy, distinguishing himself through unwavering hard work and commitment. His career was decorated with numerous sales competitions and prizes, a testament to his tireless efforts and outstanding achievements. Those who knew Ray often marveled at the energy and enthusiasm with which he approached every challenge, always emerging with new accolades.

Beyond his professional life, Ray was a man of boundless kindness and care. His love for the outdoors was evident in his cherished garden, Little Green Acres, nestled on 16 acres behind Baxters, marked by the Concrete Ten Commandments. There, Ray nurtured an impressive variety of plants, from exotic spices to vegetables, alongside goats, donkeys, hens, and more. His generosity extended far beyond personal enjoyment; he welcomed neighbors to harvest vegetables, sharing half their gathered bounty and donating the other half to families in need. This spirit of giving exemplified Ray’s heartfelt commitment to community and service.

Ray’s devotion to his family and church was a cornerstone of his life. A proud deacon at First Baptist Church, he took great joy in teaching Sunday school and supporting 4-H programs. As a dedicated member of The Gideons, he passionately distributed the Word of God, striving to place scripture where it would reach and inspire as many as possible. Even when unable to attend services, Ray contributed his time and resources to further the mission of his church.

He is survived by his daughters Melinda Cannon and Charlene McMinn, son-in-law David Cannon, grandchildren Kimberly Perez, Pate McMinn, and Jennifer Keith, as well as great-grandchildren Gavin Perez, Rose Keith, and Haley Perez. His sisters, Sandra (Leroy) Peeples and Mary Joyce Lindsey.

Ray was predeceased by his beloved wife, Peggy Louise Cothran, as well as his parents, Ruble and Mary Claire Cothran.

Joseph Rayford Cothran’s legacy is one of faith, family, and generosity. His life touched many through his kind spirit, diligent work ethic, and unwavering commitment to others. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
