Mary Elizabeth Goodwin

Mary Elizabeth Goodwin passed away peacefully at her home on February 16, 2024.  A visitation honoring Mary will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 10-11am at Drew Baptist Church with a Celebration of Life Service following at 11am. Graveside service will proceed In the Drew City Cemetery.

Mary Goodwin was born on August 12, 1925, in Drew, Mississippi to Henry Dewey Brock and Faye Lord Brock.

Mary graduated from Drew High School and attended Memphis State University Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She then attended the first class of Mississippi Delta Community College School of Nursing. In fact, she was the first person to receive her nursing degree at Mississippi Delta Community College School of Nursing. After finishing college Mary went on to work for Dr. Byron Mayo in Drew for ten years before working for Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, MS in 1962.   

Mary married her loving husband James Leslie Goodwin on February 3, 1945, in Drew, MS.

In 1971, Mary organized and opened the first ICU Unit where she was Supervisor and went on to open a second ICU unit in 1993 where she worked as Supervisor. Mary later became Nurse Manager until 2002 when she became the Patient Advocate and Laison Nurse between the doctors and administration. Doctors honored her by naming their Doctor's Lounge Mary Elizabeth Goodwin. Mary retired in June of 2008, moved to Greenville to live with her son and daughter-in-law and went to work for South Delta Planning and Development.

Mary was a proud member of MS State Nurses Association and Drew Culture Club.

Mary is preceded in death by her father Henry Brock, mother Faye Brock, husband James Leslie Goodwin, son James Henry Goodwin, sister Helen Napier, brothers  Charles F. Brock James Henry Goodwin, and sister-in-law Gerry Brock.

Mary is survived by her son Tommy (Terri) Goodwin, her grandchildren, Betsy (John) Aguzzi, Brock (Leigh) Goodwin, Peter (Sarah) Hazzard and Carly (Brad) Andrews, her great grandchildren, John Thomas Aguzzi, Will Goodwin, Ayden Aguzzi, Meg Goodwin, Jalynn Andrews, Evelyn Goodwin, Piper Andrews, Sarah Katherine Goodwin, Carter Hazzard,  Charly Andrews, and Thomas Hazzard, special family member, Delinda (Ricky) Dorsey, nephews, Charlie (Jan) Brock, Steve Napier, great nieces and nephews, Laney Brock, Carley Faye(Rob) Brown, Kaylee Saunders, Riley Saunders, Kate Napier, and Sarah Napier.

Pallbearers are Danny Clyde Storey, Bamy Owen, Bryan Ward, Roger Owen, Casey Manning and Dusty Ward.

Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Benny Wright, Dr. Don Blackwood, Dr. Mark Blackwood, Dr. Brad Baugh and Dr. Steven Clark.
