Jynan Bowen, a beloved hairdresser and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, in Charleston, Mississippi. Visitation will be held at Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland, Mississippi, on July 30, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow, starting at 12:00p.m. The graveside service will take place at North Cleveland Cemetery.
Jynan was born on May 8, 1944, in Cleveland, Mississippi, to Hollie States and Ruby Jewel Greer. She spent the majority of her life nurturing a deep-rooted connection to her hometown.
With a steadfast career spanning 42 years in cosmetology, Jynan's hands not only shaped hairstyles but also uplifted the spirits of those who sat in her chair. She was known for her professionalism and her ability to make clients feel special, all while imparting warmth and kindness.
Jynan led a life filled with grace, family, and friendship. She found joy in spending time with her loved ones, particularly attending church services and enjoying the simple pleasures of shopping. Known for her delightful sense of humor, she would often stroll through stores with items in her basket, only to decide after much deliberation, “I don't need that!”—a testament to her thoughtful nature. Jynan most of all loved serving the Lord at her home church Skene Baptist Church singing solos.
Jynan is survived by her loving daughter, Lori Bowen Pernell (Aaron) of Oakland, MS, and her devoted son, Jimmy Daniel Bowen (Bobbie Gail) of Cleveland, MS. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren, Candace Brooke West (Timothy), Laurel Hayden Peak (Cody), and Preston Daniel Bowen (Brittany), as well as her cherished great-grandchildren, Caleb Jordan West, Bowen Jordan West, Henry Daniel Peak, and Miracle Ryne Moore-West. Over the years, she also shared a special bond with her brothers, H.S. Greer (Syble), J.D. Mathis (Roseann), and Kenny Mathis (Gail), and with her twin sister, Martha Jynean Medders (Ed), and Robbie Jewel Doyle. Jynan held dear friendships with Tollie Stanford and Chuck Woodruff, who were a significant part of her life.
She joins her deceased family members, including her parents, Hollie States and Ruby Jewel Mathis, husband, Jimmy Bowen, brothers, Morris Glen Greer, James Terry Greer, J.W. Mathis, Freddie J. Mathis, sisters, Dora L Mathis (Patsy) and Sheila Ann Mathis, who have lovingly welcomed her into eternal rest.
As we remember Jynan Bowen, we celebrate her unwavering spirit, her love for others, and the countless memories she leaves behind. She will be profoundly missed by everyone who had the privilege to know her.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Skene Baptist Church, and the family requests that all food donations be brought to Skene Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on the day of the service.
