Mavis Inez Burgess

Mavis Inez Burgess, a radiant soul whose kindness touched the lives of all she encountered, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, in Cleveland, Mississippi.

A visitation honoring Mavis will be held on Friday January 2nd, at Ray Funeral home at 10am, a celebration of life will be held at 11am, which will immediately be followed by a graveside service at New Cleveland Cemetery.

Mavis was born on October 31, 1930, to Boyd and Willie Maude Morgan in Minter City, Mississippi. Mavis lived a life that was truly devoted to her family, her faith, and her community. For over 40 years, Mavis worked and supervised at Baxters Healthcare, a testament to her dedication and strong work ethic. Yet, it was her role as a mother and grandmother that she cherished most. Her family, were the center of her universe. Mavis fostered an environment of love, support, and faith where the joy of family gatherings — particularly at Easter, Christmas, and joyous reunions — created lasting memories filled with laughter and warmth. Summers spent at the lake were not merely excursions; they were cherished moments that brought her family closer together.

Mavis's incredible spirit was characterized by her deep care for others, and endless faith. Always willing to lend an ear or a helping hand, she was known for her friendly conversations and tireless support of those in need. Her involvement at Calvary Baptist Church exemplified her commitment to her faith and her community. Mavis was deeply committed and a proud member of multiple committees at Calvary and the Faith Sunday School class. She spent much of her time within these ministries, nurturing the spiritual growth of others, deepening not only her faith but also assisting those around her in their journeys.

In addition to her many roles, Mavis found great joy in yard work, tending to her garden with love, and immersing herself in the study of her Bible. She approached her walk with God with passion and devotion, finding peace and purpose in her spiritual life.

Mavis was preceded in death by her loving husband Harold Burgess Sr., whose memory she held dear; her parents Boyd Morgan and Willie Maude Gregory; and her siblings Margee Gordon and Ralph Morgan. Each of these loved ones cherished her spirited nature and will undoubtedly welcome her with open arms.

Mavis is survived by her beloved children Harold A. (Gail) Burgess Jr. and Cynthia Burgess (Ken) McCool, grandchildren Dustin Burgess and Michael McCool, a host of great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, as well as her brothers Charles Morgan and Roger Morgan.

Her legacy lies not only in the beautiful memories she created but also in the hearts of her family and friends who will carry her spirit with them. The love Mavis showered upon her family and her willingness to connect with everyone will forever inspire those privileged to have known her. As we remember her today, let us honor her remarkable life, filled with love, kindness, and an unwavering faith that touched us all. Mavis Inez Burgess will be dearly missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she loved.
