Maxine was born in Eupora, MS on October 1, 1923 to Arthur Ruel and Lula Dee Shelton Peeples. She spent most of her 97 years living on Sunflower Plantation, between Drew and Merigold, MS. She never considered living anywhere else! However, after her stroke in January, she lived with her daughter in Wiggins, MS for five months and then in Petal, MS with her oldest granddaughter, until her death. On September 4, 1940, Maxine married the love of her life, Floyd Martin Shepherd, Jr. They shared 58 years of life until his death in 1998. They had one child, Sue Shepherd Batson, who they "doted on" (spoiled). Mrs. Shepherd worked over 47 years and retired from Baxter Health Care in Cleveland, MS. She loved her job there and made many life-long friends. Since her retirement, she enjoyed visiting her family and friends, attending her church, doing word-search puzzles, watching her beloved Atlanta Braves baseball team on TV and, of course, her "occasional trip" to a casino. Highlights of her retirement were, Mrs. Shepherd flew to Atlanta and attended two Atlanta Braves games for her 90th birthday. She also went to Houston, on her 95th birthday, where she attended the Braves game and was able to go down on the field prior to the game and meet players who made their pictures with her and gave her signed baseballs! Maxine was a loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and good friend. She was called Mac from co-workers, Mackie by friends, nieces and nephews, and Mamother by grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, David P. Peeples and Edward C. Peeples; two sisters, Annie Mae Cato and Mary Catherine Hitchins; and her son-in-law, Archie M. Batson. She is survived by her daughter, Sue Shepherd Batson of Wiggins, MS; three grandchildren, Kim Dukes (Bill) of Petal, MS, Shep Batson (Tracey) of Wiggins, MS, and Brandy Herrin (Joby) of Wiggins, MS; seven great grandchildren, Ashton Dee Dukes of Petal, MS, Kelly Batson Dukes (Natalee) of Petal, MS, Reagan Elizabeth Batson, of Santa Maria, CA, Hadley Hale Batson of Wiggins, MS, Arrah Beth Batson of Wiggins, MS, Makayla Jo Herrin of Wiggins, MS, and Macon Miller Herrin of Wiggins, MS; and one great-great granddaughter, Karlee Batson Dukes of Petal, MS.
