Hugh Arant, a devoted farmer, cherished community member, and family man, went to be with the Lord on September 4, 2024, in Ruleville, Mississippi. Visitation will be held on September 6, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM at Ruleville United Methodist Church. The interment will be at Lehrton Cemetery.
Hugh was born on October 23, 1951, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Hugh and Kathryn Arant Sr. Hugh's life was marked by his deep connections to his community, church, and family, with farming playing a central role throughout his journey. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from Mississippi State University, a testament to his lifelong commitment to the land and the farming profession. His passion for agriculture propelled him into various leadership roles, where he made significant contributions. Hugh was awarded the Leflore County Young Farmer of the Year award in 1984 and the Sunbelt Ag Farmer of the Year in 2002. He was an active member of the Mississippi State M Club and the Rotary Club of Ruleville, and he served on the boards of Southern Bancorp, Farmer's Grain, Delta Electric, Minter City Water Board, Minter City Investment Club, Leflore County Farm Bureau and Delta Council. His dedication to service extended to his long-standing membership at Ruleville United Methodist Church. Among his proudest accomplishments was being a member of the Mississippi State Baseball Team from 1970 to 1971, showcasing his competitive spirit and love for sports.
He is preceded in death by his father, Hugh Miller Arant Sr. and brother, David Carver Arant Sr.
Family meant everything to Hugh. He leaves behind his beloved mother, Kathryn Carver Arant, and his devoted wife, Lucy Lea Arant. He was a proud father to his sons, Hugh Miller Arant III and his wife Rebekah, and Stephen Burton Arant and his wife Lacy. Hugh also cherished time spent with his grandchildren, Crews McCoy Arant, Mamie Carlisle Arant, and Molly Miller Arant. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Allyson Arant Land (John), his sister-in-law, Ann Elizabeth Arant, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hugh's legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his community. He will be remembered not just for his work on the farm, but as a man who loved deeply and gave selflessly.
