Neely “Lynn” Lynwood Buford, a beloved member of the Cleveland community and former Chief of Police at Delta State University, passed away peacefully at his home on January 9, 2026, surrounded by his family, at the age of 72. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Mississippi, starting at 10:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM. Graveside service will take place at North Cleveland Cemetery immediately following.
Lynn was born on July 31, 1953, to Hinds Holmon “Sonny” and Dorothy Powers Buford in Greenville, Mississippi. Lynn dedicated his life to serving others and touched the hearts of many during his remarkable career and personal life.
He was a graduate of Delta State University, where he earned his master's degree and met his wife, Sandra. In his early career, he served as a Lieutenant for the Southaven Police Department. Lynn and his family moved to Cleveland in 1994, after he accepted the position as Chief of Police at DSU. On campus, he was known for his friendly and warm presence until his retirement in 2016. His commitment to the safety and well-being of students and staff alike made a lasting impact on the university community. After his retirement, many in the community still affectionately called him “Chief.”
Lynn held strong ties to his faith and was a devoted member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he proudly served as a deacon. His love for his church and community was evident in all that he did, and he inspired many with his unwavering dedication and selflessness.
In his free time, Lynn enjoyed birdwatching, working in his yard, and above all, spending time with his grandchildren. Lynn found joy and companionship in his beloved dog, Charlie, who never left his side. He deeply loved his family and was a pillar of strength and support for his loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.
Lynn is preceded in death by his parents, Sonny and Dorothy, and sister, Gayle Daniels. In addition to his wife of 49 years, Sandra Tisdell Buford, Lynn is survived by his children, Justin Buford (Lindsay), Rachel Buford Mckee (Clay, Jr.), and Jonathan Buford; grandchildren, Mckenzie Buford, Anakatherine Burrell, Brody, Bella, Everett, and Tate Robinson, and Caroline and Skyler Buford; sisters Linda Kirkpatrick and Karen Mollahan, and brother David Buford.
As friends and family gather to honor Lynn's life, they will remember a man whose warmth and kindness left a significant mark on everyone he encountered.
