Pearl Townsend Rotenberry, 94, died at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Ms. Graveside Services will be at New Cleveland Cemetery with Reverend Milton Burd officiating. Ray Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Rotenberry was born on March 16, 1916 to the late William Jasper and Exie Veasey Townsend. After graduating as valedictorian of Marks High School, she moved to Cleveland, MS where she married Elwood Rotenberry of Water Valley, MS in 1939. In Cleveland, they owned and operated Rotenberry Appliance Store for many years where Pearl worked as secretary/bookkeeper. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, singing in the sanctuary choir for over 35 years. Mrs. Rotenberry was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, serving as president for two terms. She also participated in productions and performed backstage responsibilities at the Whistle-stop Playhouse.
In 1985, after retirement, Pearl and Elwood moved to Sardis, MS and became active members of the community. Mrs. Rotenberry served on the library board for a number of years, volunteered at the nursing home by leading singing sessions, and, together with Mr. Rotenberry, participated in worship services at Sardis First Baptist Church. Both were founders and served as president of the Red One Rook Club which met every Friday night in the renovated old Sardis High School.
After Mr. Rotenberry's death in 2004, Mrs. Rotenberry returned to Cleveland where she resided at the Cleveland Personal Care Home, joining many friends from her earlier days in Cleveland.
Mrs. Rotenberry is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 65 years, Elwood Rotenberry; her seven siblings; one niece, and seven nephews. She is survived by daughters, Diana Rotenberry of Pearl, MS and Exie Pratt(Stan) of Ridgeland, MS; granddaughter, Meredith Kelley(Tim) and great grandson, Garrett Kelley of Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law, Annie Buckner of Cleveland, MS, and Betty Townsend and Mary Rotenberry of Pensacola, FL.
Memorials may be made to the music fund of First Baptist Church, 103 S. Bolivar Avenue, Cleveland, Ms 38732 or First Baptist Church, 108 W. Lee Street, Sardis, MS 38666.
