Richard was born on June 14, 1955, in Belzoni, Mississippi, to Bob and Betty Jane Whatley. Richard lived a life marked by service, craftsmanship, and deep connections with those around him.
A graduate of high school, Richard combined his educational background with his natural talents to become an exceptional carpenter, known for his ability to construct and create with skill and precision. His work not only stands as a testament to his craft but also reflects the love and dedication he put into everything he built. In addition, Richard devoted part of his life to serving as an EMT, exemplifying his commitment to helping others in times of need.
Richard was renowned for his warm and vibrant personality. He had a profound love for reading and derived great joy from listening to the music of James Taylor. Described as a great friend by many, he cultivated strong relationships throughout his life, often offering help whenever needed. His character shone brightly, demonstrating that he would indeed do anything for anyone. Richard's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, BL "Bob" Whatley; mother, Betty Franklin Harvey; brother, James B "Dale" Whatley; great nephew, Tucker Herren; and stepfather, Wardell Harvey. Each of these family members remains an integral part of his story and legacy.
He is survived by his beloved sisters, Barbara Ouzts (Chip), Sharmon Williams, Carolyn Sellers, and Carolyn Davis. His legacy continues through his nieces and nephews: Kelly Ouzts Epps (Terry), Shane Todd, Crystal Ouzts, Landon Ouzts, Dawlson Herren, Cain Herren and Evan Henson, who will remember him fondly and carry his spirit forward in their lives.
