Born on December 31, 1947, to Selso and Odelia Guerra Garcia in Rosedale, Mississippi, Sammy grew up to play catcher for the Rosedale High School baseball team until an injury forced him to stop. Nevertheless, his love of sports always endured.
Sammy’s other great love, in life, was music. He especially felt a connection with the Blues music that shared his Delta roots - and he passed on this love of music to his sons. Both of Sammy’s sons play multiple instruments with their dad as their biggest fan. Damon became a professional musician with Blues being his strongest influence.
After High School, Sammy moved to Pascagoula to enjoy the sunshine and beaches, yet the Delta always brought him back home. He eventually moved back to his roots and worked at Delta State University until his retirement.
Sammy dearly loved his family, friends and neighbors, and his beautiful pets. He loved to laugh and have a good time. He was always quick with a good story or two, or three, complete with his signature infectious laugh - that will be greatly missed by all.
Though his song has ended, his melody will forever linger on.
Sammy is preceded in passing by his parents, Selso and Odelia Guerra Garcia, siblings, Frank Garcia, Jimmy Garcia, Blas Garcia, Charles Garcia, Juanita Staples, Cathy Welty, Thomas Garcia, brother-in- law, JR Welty, and his special friend, Debbie Carroll.
