Cleveland, MS â" Sidney George Shurden, born December 1940, died the afternoon Friday, May 14, 2010, at his home in Cleveland, MS. Funeral Services will be
held Monday, May 17, 2010 at Calvary Episcopal Church at 1:00 p.m.. Visitation will be held from 12:00- 1:00 p.m.. Burial will follow funeral in the Drew Cemetery. Sidney was a life-long resident of Drew, MS. He is predeceased by his parents, Alma King Shurden and Joseph Clinton Shurden, and his nephew, Jim Congleton. He leaves his wife, Lynn Fletcher Shurden; sons: Jason Shurden (Kelly) of West Newbury, MA, Jon Shurden (Sarah) of Atlanta, GA, and Griff Cook (Erin) of Orlando, FL; daughter, Kitty Cook Ramsey (Tom) of Jackson, MS; grandchildren: Katharine Cook, Stuart Ramsey, Whit Ramsey, Zak Hoyt, Hayden Shurden, and Andrew Cook; and sister, Nancy Shurden Congleton of Conway, AR. Sidney graduated from Drew High School and Delta State University. He was a retired farmer who spent his life practicing his favorite hobby of gardening to make the world a better place. He loved sharing his plants and knowledge about gardening with his friends and family. He was an avid sportsman who especially enjoyed creating recipes to cook game. He was a talented student of the Mississippi Blues and played the guitar in clubs in the Delta and surrounding areas in the 1950s and 1960s. He shared his love of music with his children. He was an avid historian who shared stories about Mississippi Blues history, his research on Parchman Prison, and his extensive knowledge of his familyâs history.
