William Wilson

William “Bill” Harry Wilson, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and educator, succumbed to illness on June 4, 2025, in Cleveland, Mississippi at the age of 79.

Bill was born on September 20, 1945, to Harry and Laurene Wilson at Naval Air Station Norman, Oklahoma. He lived a life dedicated to education, music, and family.

Bill’s career began as owner of Wilson Music in Carbondale, Illinois. His involvement in the music business was a testament to his lifelong passion for music and audio/sound systems. His extensive knowledge about audio systems and bluegrass, in combination with his talent as a banjo and guitar player, were the very essence of his spirit of creativity

Following his entrepreneurial pursuits in the music industry, Bill had an opportunity to enter the field of education. During his 18 years of service to Delta State University, he earned a Doctorate of Education degree and served as an Associate Professor in the university library. He taught in the Communication Departments at Wiley University in Marshall, Texas, and Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. His commitment to education was evident in both his professional pursuits and personal endeavors. Dr. Wilson willingly shared his knowledge, wisdom, and skills, nurturing a love for learning in his students.

As a die-hard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, Bill embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. His sense of humor, generous kindness, and unwavering support are fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.

Even though his absence creates a void, minute bits and pieces of lived experiences will linger and preserve the love and inspiration he brought into this world. Bill Wilson’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him in return.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Laurene Wilson, and his brothers, Donald, Steven, and John.

Bill is survived by his wife, Marikay Wilson; his sons, Eric and Gregory Wilson; and his cherished granddaughter, Tarah Wilson. His extended family includes sister-in laws Joan Rapacz and Janet Lorenz. A host of nieces and nephews will continue to carry on his family’s time-honored traditions.

In remembrance of Bill, the family suggests you say a pray, perform an act of kindness, spend time listening to music, or plant a flower in a nearby home garden in his honor. The family will hold a private service at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois at a later date.
